How's your swimming going?

Hi Swim Fans,

How's everybody doing? It's summer so I imagine everyone is out swimming. I'm just wondering how everybody's swimming is going? Are you having fun? Are you improving?

for myself, I'm having a great time. I can now swim 800+ yards in one shot. w00t! At the lake I swim out the 800 yards & take a couple of breaks. I do the return in one shot. I feel so good when I'm done :D Also, I've really improved the use of my feet & legs, so now I'm working on my arms, getting more push out of them. We have three outdoor pools in the town. Mostly I just like to splash around and have fun, though I do like to experiment & work on my stroke. Plus it's like swimming an obstacle course! Unfortunately, the state pools have closed their diving because of an accident this summer. I can still dive at the town pool. I've gotten pretty comfortable with running and diving, so now I want to work on height. There's a kid there, he's the only other adult who dives with regularity and he gets good height. Part of me wants to talk to him about diving but the other part of me wants to avoid being a cougar.

Anyway, the manager at the town pool told me about the master swim program - the lap lanes are graded and monitored and the monitor gives you tips. how cool is that?

Wow. that was a long post.

so, I'd love to hear what other swim fans are doing.

That's pretty good :)

I've been active with swimming this summer, although I swim laps year round since swimming is one of the major ways I keep in shape. It's also my greatest passion :D

front crawl (is that what you call it? Most people refer to it as the "free style" but I read somewhere that it's wrong to call it such).
Yes, front crawl or crawl is one of the correct terms. Many people refer to it as freestyle because that's probably because it's the term they call the stroke when you do meets...at least, that's how it was when I was still on swim team. However, I haven't seen anywhere why that stroke shouldn't be called freestyle.

Personally, I call it free when I put my face in the water and I call it front crawl when I keep my face out of the water so I don't confuse myself.

I want to know how to do those tumble turns too! I tried and I shoulders really hurt so I knew I'd better stop till someone can show me how to do it right.

I do the crawl, that's mostly what I do, though I've found my name for it morphing to 'freestyle'. They're both odd names. I like the dog paddle :D There's a bunch of other strokes I'd like add to what I can do. I saw this guy the other day doing something like the back stroke, but he was putting his head under water, I guess to see behind him, maybe? I don't know if I'd want to to that, but I just wondered about it. Never seen that before.
